manon i\,astnam was named University of Virginia's Nurse of the Week for the 1983-84 Week of the Nurse designated earlier last month by Virginia Governor Charles Robb.
"A friendly, open attitude toward people, a knack for planning and time budgeting and a strong dedication to nursing are only a few of the qualities which prompted fourth year student Marion Eastham’s selection” noted an article in the October 3 edition of the University Journal.
“Recognition for excellence is not something new to this Virginia native. Eastham was honored in her third year with the Beverly Harris Scholarship for demonstrating outstanding commitment to ' the nursing profession," the article reported. “Selection as the Nurse of the Week may be even more special to her because it is the result of careful consideration from the Nursing Student Council, which accepted nominations for the award directly from Nursing School students.”
Receipt of the award was a surprise to Eastham who was pleased with having earned the respect of her fellow students, according to the article.
The Journal quotes Eastham on the role of nursing in modern health care: “Once somebody’s in the hospital they can appreciate a nurse more. We don’t claim to have the knowledge a doctor does, but our role’s different; we’re really the patient advocates. We can see the subtle changes in a patient probably a lot quicker than a doctor could.”
The article relates one of the very emotional moments that Eastham has shared with patients and their families as an extern at the UVa Hospital. “I worked with a lady last summer and saw her go through chemotherapy and the hair loss — all the side effects which go with it. She was kept in isolation a lot because her immune system was really low. A cold could have killed her.
“Our main goal was to get her home. The day she left, the whole staff, not just me, was crying. That’s probably the best experience I’ve had as a nurse.
“The biggest reward is when you work with patients every day over a long period, and as a student, 1 get different patients every week. Seeing people go through cancer and going through chemotherapy and then finally getting to go home is the best.”
