Specialist at Virginia Tech, and others has shown that paraquat at planting is important on most fields even though weeds may be very small when the small grain is planted. It is also important in no-tillage and conventional fields to determine what weeds are present in the fall.
Most 1 small grain diseases should not be drastically affected by no-tillage. Insect pests are the same for no-tillage and conventional wheat, producers should scout for aphids in both the fall and spring and treat if populations reaches 20 or more aphids per row foot.
Seeding rates should be similar in no-tillage and conventional seeding with about 15 seeds per drill row foot when planting early (about l'/L' bu-acre of wheat and 2 bu/acre of barley).
Fall fertilization with complete fertilizer is important in both conventional and no-till small grains.
No-tillage small grain acreage will likely increase in Virginia as more information and improved herbicides become available.
