Marketing agent Rosser Cobb at the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the projected size of the state’s corn and soybean crops has continued to shrink.
According to revised figures released on October 18, the state’s total corn crop this year is projected at 16.875.000 bushels with an average yield of 45 bushels per acre. The soybean crop is expected to total 9.760.000 bushels at just 16 bushels per acre.
Harvesting of corn was nearly 70 percent complete at mid-month, ahead of last year when 61 percent was harvested by mid-October.
Nationwide the corn and soybean harvests were 55 percent completed and the USD A had reduced its estimate of the totals expected. Corn production was now forecast at approximately 4.3 billion bushels, down three percent from the September estimate. Soybeans were projected at approximately 1.5 billion bushels, down one percent from September.
Carryover stocks for next year are also expected to be smaller than previously thought for corn and soybeans as well. Corn stocks were now projected
