“I still think it's an area issue,” said Supervisor Newbill Miller of a proposal for a liquor package store in Flint Hill. MI don’t think (having an ABC outlet there) will affect drinking one way or another, but I just don’t think it’s worth a fight,” he added, and after a long pause, seconded a motion to refuse a favorable endorsement to the Alcohol Beverage Control Board.
In apparent agreement, Supervisors Hubert Gilkey and Charles Estes followed Mr. Miller’s lead, making it a unanimous vote on Supervisor A1 Henry’s motion to reject Werner Krebser’s request for support from the board.
Dr. Krebser explained that he built Flint Hill Square, the village’s new commercial center, "to provide certain services to*the county.” The space is occupied by the Flint Hill Post Office, an appliance store and a real estate business. Four small upstairs apartments are rented by county teachers, he noted.
The remaining commercial footage “I could have rented three times to those who wanted to put in a grocery convenience store,” the doctor said. But consideration of existing businesses - Majors’ service station, Settle’s garage and grocery and Burke’s grocery, all within a block or two of the square - led him to reject those prospective tenants, he added.
As an alternative, he approached the ABC Board about leasing the space for a package store. “At present, my application is in the real estate section for review,” and as part of that review, the supervisors have been asked to pass on the package store proposal, Dr. Krebser said.
“Prohibition has been long removed, and it will not be reenacted,” he noted, addressing the opposition to an outlet for the sale of liquor. According to Dr. Krebser, the merchants in Flint Hill support his proposal for a package store. The Methodist Church nearby is not against the idea, he added. "One member told me, *We didn’t oppose the saloon across the street. Why should we oppose an ABC store?’ ”
However, while asking for endorsement, Dr. Krebser echoed Mr. Miller’s contention that a liquor outlet isn’t worth a protracted battle. “Don’t feel you should be put over the barrel politically because of an ABC
