Mrs. Mary Ellen Cox, Chairman for the Governor’s Advisory Board on Aging, announced that the next session of Virginia’s Silver-Haired Legislature will meet August 3 through 5 at the State Capitol in Richmond. The 1987 session will celebrate the first Virginia House of Burgesses and the 200th Anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.
The Silver-Haired Legislature will meet as a unicameral body, work in committees modeled after the Virginia General Assembly, and pass legislation of interest to older citizens. Silver-Haired Legislators, aged 60 and older, will be elected by their peers to represent Virginia’s 136 counties and cities.
Several other states sponsor similar model legislatures for their older citizens. Virginia is believed to be unique in that much of the funding for the Silver-Haired Legislature - comes from donations from business, industry and private citizens.
