Coach Leake attributed the loss to mental and physical mistakes. “Doug pitched well enough to win,” Coach Leake said, “but the mistakes hurt.”
He said the team seemed a bit tight going into the game, which he felt was due to the drubbing which the Panthers received from Strasburg last year. Strasburg returned seven of those players, and Coach Leake said he thought his returning players probably remembered that experience and were affected by it.
He said the mistakes - particularly the mental errors -- could be chalked up to the team’s lack of experience. The Panthers, he said, made mistakes like throwing to a base without checking the runners at other bases, “things which we practice but which have not yet become automatic” for the mostly young team.
Rappahannock committed six errors, and of Strasburg’s nine runs, only three were charged to Smith as earned runs.
“Now that they’ve lost a game because of those errors, I don’t look for it to happen again,” he added. “The physical errors will always happen — the mental errors are what we have been working on. The team learned by this experience that they have to think one pitch ahead.
