Anotner contributing factor Forst indicated was the start-up this year of a new data entry system. Because of a delayed installation and significant employee retraining, the initial processing productivity levels were lower. To deal with this situation, the Department of Taxation is, for the first time, operating a night and weekend data entry shift. Approximately 125,000 refunds wifi be issued each week, and the total volume of refunds should surpass last year’s numbers by the middle of May.
At present, the bad news is that the refiind cycles are running an average of eight weeks. The good news is that the improved system will allow next year’s refunds to be expedited beyond historical levels.
Since the early 1970s the state has been able to issue refunds faster than the Internal Revenue Service. This year will be the first exception to that, and Commissioner Forst asked that individuals be patient and delay contacting the Department or the local Commissioners of the Revenue about refunds until eight weeks after they have filed their returns.
