Senator John H. Chafee (R-RI) announced recently the creation of the Republican Conference Task Force on Excellence in Education and Literacy. The Task Force will examine how the U.S. can improve its schools and upgrade the quality of education for all American children.
Senator Paul S. Trible Jr. (RVA) will serve as the chairman of the Task Force. Its members are Senators Orrin G. Hatch (R-UT), ranking Republican on the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee which oversees education legislation, Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), Charles E. Grassley (R-IA), and Steve Symms (R-ID), who chaired the Conference Education and Literacy Task Force in the 99th Congress. Conference Chairman Chafee will serve in an ex officio capacity.
In announcing Sen. Trible’s appointment, Sen. Chafee noted the Virginia Republican’s strong, long standing interest in improving the quality of the nation’s schools and improving America’s international competitiveness. "Senator Paul Trible has been deeply committed to improving education in our country, by getting back to the basics in our schools and teaching young people traditional American values of discipline, respect and hard work. Paul’s background and commitment make him an outstanding choice to chair this important Conference Task Force, and I am delighted he is willing to take on this job,” Sen. Chafee said.
