Students back lottery
RICHMOND — The governor of Virginia’s Model General Assembly says he supports a state lottery and hunter safety courses, but has mixed emotions about changing the state song to “Sweet Virginia Breeze.”
Robert William Duren of Chesapeake, who heads the assembly of approximately 800 high-school students, said during his opening remarks to the assembly April 2 that a state lottery “would be a good source of revenue.”
“Many states have state lotteries right now, including neighboring Maryland and the District of Columbia,” Mr. Duren said during his talk to a joint session meeting in a Richmond church.
The Model General Assembly, sponsored by the Virginia YMCA, began last week.
Participants are due to consider bills ranging from the state lottery question to a uniform grading system fdr Virginia’s pubic schools.
Mr. Duren said he supports hunter safety legislation. “Each time a hunter enters a wood or field, be it with a gun, bow or other form of weapon, he is not only in charge of his own life, but of the lives of those around him,” Mr. Duren said.
The teen-ager said he favors requiring motorists to wear seat belts, which the General Assembly approved last winter.
