Cardiac stress testing, Hotter monitoring, and echocardiograms are provided by the newest department opened this year at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
Following referral by a primary physician, cardiologist Dr. Stephanie Mendlow evaluates and assesses heart problems. "I enjoy cardiac rehabilitation and preventive cardiology,” she says. “I like working with patients to help prevent the arrival and progession of heart disease."
Dr. Mendlow interprets several important diagnostic tests:
The cardiac stress test assesses the patient’s heart's response to exercise. It is performed on a treadmill with an electrocardiogram recorded each minute. Blood pressure is also recorded. The results show abnormalities and assist in diagnosing coronary artery disease.
The 24-hour Holter monitor is an electrocardiograph monitor that assesses irregular heartbeats. The small monitor similar to a tape recorder is worn by the patient through regular activities for 24 hours.
An echocardiogram gives the cardiologist a video picture of the chambers of the heart and its valves, allowing her to see the inner structure of the heart and see the heart expand and contract and the valves open and close. In addition, the Doppler is another analysis that listens to the patterns of blood flow in the heart.
