School administrators sent the Health Department the present RCHS enrollment - 351 - and projections for a continued decline over the next few years. The State Water Control Board verified that the existing septic system is functioning properly and the Health Department okayed the deletion of the sewage disposal upgrade, allowing the School Board to trim $122,000 from Mr. Baughn’s bid. “The septic system will go as it is. There will be no expansion in what we have now,” the assistant superintendent confirmed.
In addition, Mr. Campbell reported that none of the other contract deletions approved by the School Board in a work session last Thursday involved “substantial changes” in the RCHS building project. “There’s no black hole for an auditorium. It’s going to have a sloping floor and acoustical ceiling tiles.”
To bring the cost down from $1,680,000 to $1.5 million, the School Board deleted:
• Surface treatment for the driveway to the rear of the building ($8,775).
• New metal lockers for the locker rooms in the new gymnasium ($13,300).
• Work stations and lighting fixtures in the teachers’ workroom ($1,465).
• Air conditioning for the auditorium ($3,300).
• Receiving dock and freezer/cooler unit for the expanded cafeteria and kitchen ($15,483).
• Interior corridor door ($300).
• Coiling grill for concession stand ($2,196).
• Nine skylights in the gym.
In addition, with both interior and exterior piping, PVC has been substituted for cast iron ($12,306). In every instance except the auditorium, where the plan calls for plaster ceilings, double layer drywall will be used ($14,263). Instead of raising the flooring in the existing locker rooms on either side of the stage to the same height as the stage, the floors will be left at their present level ($1,700) and cast-in-place concrete will be substituted for pre-cast concrete window sills ($2,300).
“Mr. Baughn has worked with us very well (on changes to. bring the contract price down to the money available),” said Mr. Campbell. “Ev- 4 erybody has worked hard to get this thing going.”
On Monday, Peyton Baughn put his name to the contract. On Tuesday, Superintendent Robert Esta- 4 brook delivered the papers to Beverly Massie for the School Board chairman’s signature.
Groundbreaking is set for later this month, with construction expected to be completed within a year.
