With the Panthers record now even at 2-2 for the season, the team has five batters hitting over .300, and the team’s top seven hitters are averaging .332. Factoring in the two other starters, Rappahannock’s slugging percentage so far is a respectable .286. “For high school baseball, that’s a real good team average,” Coach Leake commented.
Wayne Foster and Reggie Williams are leading the team at the plate, tied with .384 averages. James Walters follows close behind, batting .363 for the year. Wesley Jenkins is averaging one for three, at .333; while Greg Smith rounds out the “over .300 crew” with a .312 average.
“Offensively, I’m very satisfied,” Coach Leake said. “We need to fine time our defensive skills, both physical and mental. If we can do that, it should lead to success during the remainder of the season.”
The Panthers finish off their road trip with a game at Page County Thursday, April 9.
They return to Rappahannock for a home game against Clarke County on Tuesday, April 14. Both games begin at 5 p.m. Friday’s game against George Mason has been postponed, and will be played on May 4 at RCHS.
