Four years ago last August I moved into a townhouse in Reston. I had a yard the size of a postage stamp but at last I could exercise my lust to garden!
I picked up a spading fork at the hardware store and confidently stuck it into the weedy lawn. It went in about three inches. I jumped on it. It sank in to six. I pushed on it. It refused to budge.
“Better call Jeff,” advised my husband.
For a small fee our well-muscled friend agreed to dig. It took him most of the afternoon to spade up the small plot next to the wooden deck.
I gazed at the heavy red clay that passes for soil in Virginia.
“You’d better get some loam for that or you’ll have trouble growing much of anything,” Jeff remarked.
