“I run with the squad. I see it (the highway carnage caused by drunk drivers). I know how bad it is,” said Chester Gap rescue squadsman Bert Gilkey, the single speaker in favor of the ABC proposal. “But I don’t see how having (a package store) in Flint Hill will increase the number of accidents,” he said, asking that Dr. Krebser be allowed to pursue his business interests.
ABC store not worth fighting over
“I decided to go skating before Mr. Eastham suggested it,” said Supervisor Miller, referring to his recent announcement that he will not seek reelection in November. “But I never based my decision on being reelected ... I just don’t think this is worth the fight.”
A liquor outlet anywhere in Rappahannock County presents “a whole set of negatives,” maintained Jackson District Supervisor A1 Henry. By making alcohol more readily available, an ABC store here will “increase the tragedies associated with its use,” he maintained. Dr. Krebser has built a nice commercial center in Flint Hill and will be able to find another tenant easily, Mr. Henry contended. “He won’t suffer a loss because of our decision,” he said, offering a motion to deny a favorable endorsement.
Silence followed.
“No second?” asked Chairman Hubert Gilkey.
“I will,” Mr. Miller answered, and the motion carried 4-0. (Supervisor Nelson Lane, the representative from Stonewall-Hawthom District, did not attend Monday’s board meeting.)
Lions Club auction
The Rappahannock Lions Club will sponsor a benefit auction on Saturday, April 25, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington VFD building in Washington.
Handel’s ‘Messiah’
on April 12
The Front Royal Oratorio Society will present George Frederick Handel’s “Messiah” on Sunday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Front Royal Presbyterian Church, 117 Luray Ave. Admission is free.
The society has been bringing outstanding music to the area for more than 25 years. The 50-voice choir will be under the direction of Ronald Johnston. Mrs. Beverly Clark, who will accompany the group, is also well known in the area as an outstanding musician.
Immediately following the concert, refreshments will be served in the Fellowship Hall.
