Since the legal game hunting season has ended, the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries has reported a significant decrease in calls to the Commission’s wildlife violations hotline (1800-237-6712).
According to a Commission spokesman, the calls may have decreased because citizens may think that game law violations occur only during hunting season. That’s not true, he said. Violations occur year-round, especially by the “outdoor outlaws” who may be under the mistaken impression that law enforcement efforts slow down during the off season.
Calls to the hotline will bring results, no matter the time of year, the spokesman emphasized. He pointed out that fishing season has begun, and anglers who observe violations may do their part in preserving the balance of the Commonwealth’s fisheries by alerting the Commission to those anglers who take more than their fair share or who are catching illegal species, or using illegal equipment.
For instance, he said, striper fishing in tidal waters is closed until June 1, and some trout streams are restricted as to type of baits allowed.
Callers to the hotline do not have to identify themselves, but they may be eligible for a reward based on the seriousness of the violation they report. Information from every call is turned over immediately to game wardens in that area who will investigate the complaint.
Cases brought as a result of previous calls are now pending in courts throughout the Commonwealth.
