In another game shortened because of darkness, Rappahannock’s varsity baseball team lost a road game to Strasburg last Wednesday.
After going into the sixth burning with an 8 to 5 lead, the Panthers allowed Strasburg four runs in the bottom half of the final inning to drop the contest, 9 to 8. Doug Smith was charged with the loss.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first burning and adding another three in the second on a three-run homer by clean-up hitter Wayne Foster over the center field fence.
Strasburg answered the first two Panther tallies with two of their own in the bottom of the first, but trailed 5-4, even after adding another two in the third inning.
Rappahannock added another three runs in the top of the fourth, stretching the lead to 8-4. Strasburg narrowed that to 8-5 with one run in the bottom of the fourth.
“They gained a bit of confidence when we got that lead,” Coach Gary Leake said. “I told them that Strasburg is a good team, that they would fight back - and they did.”
The home team added four runs in the bottom of the sixth - just as the game was called due to darkness -to squeak out a 9-8 victory.
