Generally, construction projects such as a deck, walks, or pools should be installed before the plant '* materials. If you have a plan from an independent designer, you can take it around and get estimates from various contractors. If you are working with a nursery, decide how much they will do for you (a nursery can be “one-stop shopping”).
After your plantings are installed, they will need considerable attention for the first three years. It takes that long for most plants to become established in their new soil.
The first year that plants are in the ground, proper watering is of prime importance. Remember that the roots of the plants are all inside a root ball which is the shape of the pot or the burlap bag in which they came from the nursery. It will take about three years for those roots to spread out into the soil.
Your plants won’t put out much top growth during the first years either. You will have to watch for bugs and diseases because the plants are vulnerable in these early stages.
Once your plants are established in their new home, care becomes less demanding. Of course, you will always have to watch water requirements and be on the lookout for disease. Butother than that, some fertilizer and mulch are about the biggest chores.
