Some Points to Ponder When Transplants Fail The following questions to ask when transplants fail are provided courtesy of Chemlawn Services Corporation: 1. Was the plant selected one that would grow in the area? Was the plant of good quality? 2. Was the planting done in poorly drained soils? Were procedures used to correct poorly drained soils? 3. Was the planting done at the proper time? 4. Was the hole dug properly? Was the plant set in at the proper depth? 5. Was the container removed or was the burlap pushed down? Were roots sliced on a container-grown plant? 6. Were the wires or cords removed? 7. Was the backfill done with properly prepared soil mixture? 8. Was fertilizer used at planting time? 9. Was mulch used? 10. Has sufficient water been applied at proper intervals? NOTE: It should be stressed that many times transplant problems not show up until after some time has passed.
