In recent years, taxpayers who filed early got their Virginia tax refunds quickly. However, this year the refund cycle for those individuals who filed in January and February is running up to eight weeks, announced Tax Commissioner William Forst.
“Over 200,000 refunds that were scheduled to have been issued by April 1 are still being processed, lengthening the historical four to six weeks early filing cycle,” Forst said.
Two major causes were cited for the extended time. First, approximately 100,000 returns that are normally filed in late January and early February were not filed until the latter part of February. This caused a shortage of inventory in the early processing weeks and a flood of returns arriving in mid-February.
The actual cause for this delay is not known; however, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland are all experiencing the same change. Officials speculate that the heavy snows delayed receipt of withholding statements from employers, and thus made it difficult for taxpayers to get the necessary information to file their returns.
