“We’re ready to go!” announced a jubilant Tom Campbell after consultations and negotiations between the School Board, architects, contractor, State Health Department and State Water Control Board brought the cost of the proposed Rappahannock County High School expansion down to the $1.5 million amount of the low interest loan awarded for the project.
Nothing has come easy in the high school capital improvement drive.
The need for additional space was recognized in 1976 by a joint School Board/Board of Supervisors committee but political considerations got in the way, and the group balked at recommending a means of providing that space. In the intervening years, two different School Board committees proposed expansion plans, but neither won the endorsement of even the full School Board, much less the approval of the Board of Supervisors.
