been handed down from one generation to another. Like many other crafts, it has its own history, literature, language and trade secrets. Smiths passed on their know-how either to their sons, or to apprentices in the trade, who, in turn, instructed others. Thus the art has survived to the present day.
True apprenticeships, in which the apprentice was bound to the master craftsman, are no longer a part of the economic and social systems. Today, the number of finished craftsmen in ornamental iron is fast diminishing, their ranks growing thinner with succeeding years.
