Early on Mr. Smith saw abortion as a key issue, although he approached the subject carefully. He said that the government should not invade a woman’s privacy, while he noted that Rep. Slaughter opposes abortion in most cases.
The Smith campaign reacted quickly to current events, supporting President George Bush when he sent troops to Saudi Arabia and attacking the first budget package compromise worked out this fall as unfair.
A native and resident of Winchester, Mr. Smith grew up in politics and has more experience in the game than most candidates who are running for the first time. He worked in the campaigns of Attorney General Mary Sue Terry and U.S. Senator Charles Robb.
He took a degree in business management from Shenendoah College and a master of divinity degree from Eastern Mennonite Seminary.
Mr. Smith runs his business, Crystallite Solar Marketing Group, in Winchester. He also serves as pastor of the Greenwood and Carpers Valley Charge of the United Methodist Church.
