It appears fall is really upon us with the cool temperatures last week" following the August-like weather with temperatures in the 80’s. We were all surprised to learn of the tornado in nearby Remington last Thursday, Oct. 18, in which 11/2 to 2 million dollars in damages has been estimated. It has been declared a disaster area. Fortunately no one was killed in Remington; however, an Orange county man was killed. It is believed to be the same tornado that hit Remington 10 minutes later. In all, five tornadoes touched down in the Washington area.
Mrs. Liza Settle recalls that a tornado hit near here in Rock Mills area and Woodville in 1929, killing her half-brother and Jesse Settle’s father Carroll Settle. He was killed when their home was completely destroyed and the chimney fell on him. Only the stone foundation remained. It was a very destructive one.
At the Ruritan’s family night dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 17 everyone enjoyed fine food served by the Auxiliary of the Volunteer Fire Department and great entertainment by the Shenandoah Travelers. Winners of a bottle of Alpenglow non-alcoholic “Champagne” were Mrs. Nora Segrest, Mrs. Jamie Segrest, Miss Katie Zindel, Mrs. Myrtle Jenkins and Mrs. Bonnie Curtis.
