To the editor:
A recent contributor to the editorial section of the Rappahannock News suggested that he would like to read Congressman French Slaughter’s lips in order to determine how Mr. Slaughter intended to solve the budget crisis currently facing our nation.
Due to the intricacies involving in lip reading, I would like to provide an excerpt of the July 17, 1990 Congressional Record where Congressman Slaughter suggested a solution to his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives: “Mr. Chairman, today the House has an opportunity to vote for the American taxpayer, and against special interests and congressional irresponsibility that have lead members down the path of deficits too long. . .Too often, we overlook the fact that future generations of Americans. . .are being saddled with this debt because of our inability and unwillingness to control
