D. French Slaughter Jr., a candidate for re-election to Congress, deserves and should receive the vote of every independent thinking citizen of the Seventh District.
French hesistates to “toot his own horn,” but as a taxpayer from the Seventh District for over 60 years, I want to relate some of the facts that show his outstanding qualifications to represent our District.
For generations his family has been actively associated with our area. Slaughter Mountain in Rappahannock County is a reminder of his forefathers. French was born and raised in Culpeper and after graduating from the local high school he attended VMI for two years, served four years in the U.S. Army in the Infantry, European Theater. He was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart.
After his World War II Army service he attended the University of Virginia and received a law degree. He was so highly regarded that he was later elected President of the University of Virginia Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Visitors of the University, and its President from 1980 to 1982.
