operative learning. Youth involved in this hands-on approach to learning about economics and the stock market will:
• learn about the American market economy
• relate current political and economic events to stock prices
• recognize various business forms
• identify the sources of funds available to a corporation
• understand the laws of supply and demand
• have the experience in purchase and sell of stocks which requires reading stock market quotations in the newspapers, measuring a corporation’s success, executing stock sales and computing brokerage fees and interest charges.
Because the game lasts only 10 weeks, the game emphasizes the speculative aspects of stock buying. (Long-term investment in the stock market has different goals). The true goal of the SMG is to provide an opportunity to learn “fundamental economic concepts” in an exciting manner.
The Rappahannock County teams began this fall’s program on Friday, Oct. 5.
