This is simply a post hoc, ergo propter hoc argument, defined as an error in logic that accepts as a cause something that merely occurred earlier in time. In addressing this argument, we must remember that throughout the 1970’s, well before the Reagan buildup, we had a submarine-based nuclear force in place which was fully sufficient by itself to deter Soviet nuclear aggression.
With regard to SDI as a deterrent, it is worth noting that it is not now operational, and by the end of phase one,. 10 years hence, will at best be only partially operational. There is a substantial body of opinion among leading scientists to the effect that SDI has no reasonable prospect of ever becoming an effective shield against full scale nuclear aggression.
The research for SDI is estimated to cost $32 billion; the total system, $1 trillion. It is my opinion that SDI is a boondoggle by which we are all being homswoggled.
The collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe and the dramatic changes now taking place inside the U.S.S.R. are the result of many factors, chief among which is the inherent impracticality of managing a country’s entire economy by a vast, centralized bureaucracy. In my opinion, and it is only an opinion, the same result would have obtained even in the absence of the Reagan defense buildup. I know of no persuasive evidence to the contrary, other than post hoc, ergo propter hoc.” And we have already dismissed that, haven’t we?
Recommendation: On Nov. 6, vote for David Smith for Congress. A vote for Smith is a vote against the regressive policies of Presidents Reagan and Bush, to which our recumbent Congressman is a bondsman.
