role. Unfortunately, there are other potential flash points throughout the world which would need the necessary resources to put American strength wherever our interests indicate.
Our Congressman French Slaughter has gone on record in firmly expressing his feelings when he cites the Iraqu invasion of Kuwait and the general threat to world peace their action poses.
His and other like voices must be continually heard in warning those who have been calling for drastic reductions in our military budget. Such reduction of our military forces should take place in a careful and methodical manner which would take into account any short or longrange threats identified by our leaders. Our military services would still be equipped and manned by the best, both material and personnel.
Lastly, the so-called “Peace Dividend,” this magic dollar figure should not be swallowed up in that morass of ill-conceived social programs, but used to counter another threat to our country — reduce the awesome deficit!
French Slaughter’s name will appear on the ballot in next month’s election. Let us carefully weigh the facts before we mark that printed slip. Should we place our trust in a virtual unknown, or in one who has experienced the battle-scene and realistically views this country’s role in a “new world” — hopefully?
