In Warren County, Mr. Burke added, the company provides free service to the county’s schools, as well as a monthly schedule of programming for the Arts and Entertainment cable channel. The schools also use Adelphia’s cable feed to tune into the Public Broadcasting Service’s continuing education and instructional programming.
Treasurer Brad Fisher asked if the company provides small systems with the same level of service as their larger metropolitian counterparts.
“You are not out here by yourself,” Mr. Price said. “You will be an extension of a much larger system.”
“We thought that with the telephone system,” Mr. Fisher replied.
Mr. McCarthy said “I would point out they have an exclusive franchise. The cable television franchise is non-exclusive — if they don’t perform to your satisfaction you can invite competition.”
The council approved the cable television ordinance by a 6-0 vote. Councilman Newbill Miller did not attend last Wednesday’s meeting.
The council also approved unanimously Adelphia’s application for a special use permit to allow the cable television lines to be strung on overhead utility poles.
