In the recent issue of the Retired Officer Magazine, General Colin Powell, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, was quoted: “It is a reality that America is the only super power left in all the divisions of power: political, economic, military and the power of our values.”
How many of us who have personally viewed West Berlin (before the wall), the Kaesong Corridor, the Fulda Gap, and other strategic coldwar locations could have envisioned what has taken place to-date. The Fulda Gap is now only a geographic feature in Germany which can be likened to Chester Gap. Let us hope that it will not be viewed again on 1:25,000 maps with critical strategic interest.
On Capitol Hill, the doves have taken full advantage of this opportunity to make capital of the diminishing cold war confrontational threat of the two world powers. In both the House and Senate, we see members of the Democratic Party eagerly licking their chops calling for massive reductions in defense dollars and the creation of a “peace dividend” which would increase funding of existing social programs and creation of new ones which are guaranteed to solve all of our social ills.
