Smith for Congress
The Seventh District Congressional campaign, between Republican D. French Slaughter Jr. and Democrat David M. Smith, probably would have been a good one if the incumbent Congressman had bothered to show up.
There is plenty to talk about. The nation is on the brink of war. The economy is shaky, at best. The federal transportation program needs retooling, especially as it pertains to Northern Virginia. We are facing an assortment of environmental crises. And much more.
As it is, Mr. Smith is running against a ghost. The campaign up through the last few days has seen the challenger vigorously stumping this giant district giving speeches, attending forums, working the banquet circuit, pumping arms on Main Street, and, like many others in the region, hoping to catch a glimpse of his three-term Republican opponent.
Mr. Smith has addressed many issues that concern voters in our district: the budget and the deficit, the savings and loan crisis, the environment and a national energy policy. He has explained his pro-choice stance on the abortion issue and discussed his views on education, funding roads and mass transportation and the prospect of involving the military in an anti-drug war.
