Mark the dates when you plan to decorate your home, make special holiday treats, and visit friends. On the days when you plan to entertain, sketch out a menu and other items you may need such as rental video tapes for youngsters.
If you could make items ahead, jot down a date when these could be made and frozen. If you are entertaining several times during the holidays, consider having similar menus. You will find that it takes less time to prepare the food and any leftovers can be effectively used.
Next plan a budget for the holidays. Take a look at your assets and determine the maximum amount that could be spent on the holidays. List all of the people you plan to give gifts to and the approximate cost.
Project the cost of any entertaining you plan to do as well as any traveling. If you are having house guests during the holidays you may need to plan for additional expenses for utilities. More people usually translates to more hot water used, more heating used and more electricity for lighting, personal care and cooking.
