Douglas has not chosen a college to attend in the fall, though he has considered several different ones at various spots in the United States. He hopes to major in aeronautical engineering, and design airplanes.
Douglas is not the first Rappahannock County High School student to receive the merit semifinalist award. Last year the school graduated a finalist, Elizabeth Oliver, and several years earlier her sister, Ann, was named a finalist.
Wakefield School also announced a Semi-finalist in the Merit program. Elizabeth Daugherty, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Daugherty of Boyce, Clarke County, is a senior at the private school in Huntly.
She is the editor of the school’s literary magazine, “Talisman,” as well as playing on the field hockey and soccer teams. She is also a member of the Wakefield Ski Club.
Besides Miss Daugherty, several Wakefield School students were named as commended students in the scholarship program. These students, approximately 35,000 nationwide, scored slightly below the average needed to be named as a semi-finalist.
They are Amy Longyear, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Longyear of Washington; Bridget Butler, daughter of Mrs. Anne Butler of Marshall; Lewis Martin, son of Dr. and Mrs. Lewis Martin of Millwood; and John Viega, son of Mrs. Margaret Doyle of Winchester.
