Hunting is one of the most popular activities on the George Washington National Forest, which provides the largest amount of land open to the general public for hunting in Virginia, almost a million acres.
Popular game includes deer, turkey, bear, squirrel, grouse plus waterfowl at Lake Moomaw, west of Hot Springs.
The hunting forecast this year is favorable. District rangers are reporting an abundance of deer and turkey sightings.
“Given good weather, we anticipate another good season,” said Gary Spiers of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. “We don't have an abundant oak mast crop, but the deer harvest should be much like last year, turkey a little better and grouse should be much like last year, turkey a little better and grouse should be improved.”
