But his penmanship expertise does not stop there. He contributed his services for the recent Amissville Volunteer Fire Department Craft Days brochures and their antique car show awards.
And, readers of the Rappahannock News are also familiar with Mr. Pierson’s work, though they may not realize it. He executed the newspaper’s flag — the front page nameplate — with its Old English embellishments.
While penmanship is his profession, his hobby of collecting recorded sound marks him as an offical source of the soundtrack for the Players’ upcoming production.
Helping with the recreation of authentic radio personalities such as The Shadow, The Lone Ranger, Abbot and Costello, Lulu Bell and Scotty, Baby Rose Marie and others is only part of Mr. Pierson’s contribution. All music for the event will come from Mr. Pierson’s collection — golden sounds from the 1920s through the late 40’s.
“The phonograph is the only instrument I can play,” he said with a laugh, smiling as he added that his performance is “pretty good, too.”
Spinning all the discs in Mr. Pierson’s basement only goes to show that “practice makes perfect.”
Mr. Pierson has more than 20,000 recordings lining his basement walls dating back to the dawn of recorded sound, in 1888.
