Rappahannock County High School senior Douglas Kilpatrick has been named a Semifinalist in the 1991 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The 17-year-old youth, son of Sean and Sharon Kilpatrick of Woodville, was notified that his high math and verbal scores on his Preliminary Standardized Achievement Tests (P-SAT) qualified him as a semi-finalist.
One half of one percent of all students taking the college entrance examinations are named as semifinalists, placing them in the position to become a finalist and becoming eligible for scholarships.
Semi-finalists are notified later in the school year whether they have been named as National Merit finalists.
Douglas said he was not surprised at the award, as his scores in both math and verbal categories were in the high 600’s, placing himself in the position to be considered as a semi-finalists. Though, he said, he was surprised when he received his final SAT scores. “I was disappointed on my math scores,” he said, adding the SAT scores were in the mid to low 700’s.
Kilpatrick is a Life Scout, one badge below an Eagle, a second year starter on the school’s pop quiz team, vice-president of Technology Students’ Association for the second year, treasurer for his senior class
