Clean-up and planting around the garden can provide enjoyable exercise on sunny fall days.
Be sure to keep leaves raked up from the lawn. If they are allowed to accumulate and become matted down by rain, they may smother the grass. Rake them up regularly and store them in a pile for use as mulch in the garden next summer.
Cut down the plants in the vegetable and flower garden and turn them under to decompose. This will enrich the soil with organic matter
