The town’s zoning ordinance allows installation of underground utility lines by-right, but requires a special use permit for any new lines strung on overhead poles. The ordinance was adopted to encourage utilities to bury their lines and remove the clutter of overhead lines.

Mr. Reynolds noted that the permit would require Adelphia to follow existing overhead paths, and would not allow lines to be strung across areas not presently traversed by power lines.

Mr. Burke called that stipulation a “concern.” If the electric company feeds a house from one direction, and then feeds the next house from the opposite direction, “there may be a place where we may need to feed through.”

“We would ask,” Mayor Dean Morehouse replied, “that you bring those specific concerns to the council at the time for design. It may require a separate permit, but we can address all those concerns at one time.”
