In other business, the council:
• heard that the joint town/county committee on loitering met and discussed options to address the problem. Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke remains opposed to a loitering ordinance, and Sheriff John Henry Woodward suggested that the benches on the sidewalk in front of the Clopton House be removed. The idea of opening the Recreation Center later was discussed, Councilman Mark Bailey reported, “but it was decided that would not be a good idea. It would create more problems than it would solve by having a congregation there after dark.”
Mr. Bailey said Sheriff Woodward told the committee that his department is devoting all the time it can to the problem, and that if additional patrols are needed, the town would be requested to reimburse the Sheriffs Department for the overtime necessary for the additional patrols.
• heard Mrs. Parrish question the recent street dance sponsored by the Washington Volunteer Fire Department. She wondered if the town is sending a “mixed message,” by criticizing those who loiter around the church lot but then welcoming an event “where alcohol is served in the middle of town.”
