Having made constituent accesibility an issue in her race against incumbent state Sen. Kevin Miller, R-26th, Margaret Haynes went a step further this week, challenging him on a toll-free line he says he will establish.
She accused him of “misleading” voters by saying he has such a number, and said, “In eight years in office, he’s never said a single word about this idea until I came up with it.”
Sen. Miller admits he only recently acquired the 800 number, about 10 days ago in fact, but offered proof it exists. Although he won’t release the entire number until after the election, said Sen. Miller, for fear his political enemies will run up a giant bill on the number, the final four digits are 0692.
Asked if Ms. Haynes gave him the idea, Sen. Miller said no, but a fellow state legislator, a Democrat, suggested it. He is setting up a number “to give constituents a sense I’m more available.”
During this campaign Ms. Haynes has criticized Sen. Miller for not responding to contituents during his two terms as senator.
