Zen groups
host retreat
The Sai Sho An and Blue Ridge Zen groups are hosting a five day retreat at the Blue Ridge Zen Group's rural retreat center in the mountains north of Charlottesville.
The retreat begins on Wednesday evening Oct. 30, and ends at noon on Nov. 3. Participants may attend on a part-time basis, but preferrence will be given to full-timers. The retreat will be led by Sandy Gentei Stewart — a senior monk of Joshu Sasaki Roshi — one of the leaders of the American Zen movement.
A Zen retreat is called a “sesshin” which means “putting mind and heart together.” It consists of rigorous periods of sitting meditation (zazen) alternating with walking meditation, work practice, and instruction on Zen practice. Silence is maintained although there are opportunities to ask questions throughout the weekend.
The retreat center is in a remote mountain setting next to the Shenandoah National Park about one hour from Charlottesville.
Cost of the retreat is $100 for five days or $25 per day. Space js limited to 12 participants.
The Blue Ridge Zen Group meets daily in Charlottesville (except Saturdays), and the Sai Sho An group meets on Tuesday evenings in Delaplane in Fauquier County.
