I trust the voters will not be misled by George Allen’s recent negative TV ad that distorts Congressional candidate Kay Slaughter’s position on taxes.
As a city council member who has served with Kay and who has been present at all council meetings since she took office, I would like to set the record straight. While on council or during hur campaign for council, Kay Slaughter has never proposed, supported, or voted to institute a local income tax or to raise any other tax. The local income tax issue was discussed at a council retreat in 1990 in the context of our concern for how the costs of local government are shouldered by real property taxpayers. The council unanimously agreed that local option income tax should not be in the city’s legislative package.
Kay’s position against tax increases and for tax relief has been clear to anyone who has watched council since her election. She advocated placing a cap on how fast real estate assessments can rise in a single year. She argued against imposing a local cigarette tax.
And in her campaign, she has supported a constitutional amendment to balance the federal budget and has adopted a “no new taxes” pledge. To say she supports higher taxes ignores both her record and her promises, and is but another cynical attempt by professional politicians to mislead citizens to the neglect of the public good.
