Asked by a commission member what his thoughts on controlling density and leaving open spaces in Warren County were, George said, “As county administrator I have some ideas but I also have five board members that each have five different ideas,” eliciting laughter from the crowd.
Deputy Fauquier County Administrator Dick McNear told the commission, “I really think your action proposal list is very short. And it falls very short of accomplishing your findings and I am hoping it is just a starting point and will eventually get significantly larger in the future.”
Steve Sagar of The Friends of the Shenandoah said, “Tourism is a major industry in this section of the Valley. But a lack of long-term planning is about to kill this goose that laid this golden egg.
“Tourists come here for rafting and fishing. They try to get to the river and all they see is no trespassing signs ... if they do find access to the river it is at a public landing or somewhere where they’re standing knee-deep in traffic.
“When you get this many people using one small area it just won’t work. You can’t keep it clean.” He added that there are similar small accesses to national forests, “These people come out and they are highly dissappointed.
