department. During that time, on many occasions Sheriff Woodward conducted himself, and handled various situations, in a manner that I perceived as being unprofessional. He showed a very high degree of lack of sensitivity to women’s issues and other issues.

In recent weeks I attended a meeting where Sheriff Woodward was present. As we were discussing issues related to animals and thenowners, the sheriff indicated that he would like to make a comment, but was hesitant in light of recent publicity concerning sexual harassment.

I then asked him not to make the comment, but he did. He stated that “you know the old saying, you can shoot my wife, but not my dog, or should I say you can shoot my spouse.” He then laughed. In my mind this took a great deal of arrogance, disrespect and insensitivity to make that statement in a public meeting, in front of those whom he knows have a great deal of concern about the major problem of abuse toward women and children.

I want a sheriff who will respond to the needs and concerns of women, who will not make jokes or make light of the issues of domestic violence. Now is the time, more than ever, to elect people to public office who will be responsive and accountable to the needs and concerns of women, and who will respond to requests in an effective and professional manner.
