Rappahannock High soccer coach Uli Maeyer said he was “in shock” following the Panthers’ 8-1 drubbing at the hands of George Mason High School Monday afternoon.
Despite making great strides in beefing up the program this year, the Panthers showed their overall youth and inexperience before the home crowd.
Counting a forfeit by Eastern Mennonite, the loss to George Mason dropped the Panthers’ record to 2-5 heading into the season finale against the Warrenton Blaze travel team, the homecoming game.
The Mason game, said Coach Maeyer, was “a disaster game. It was a total letdown, and we lost it by making horrible mistakes on defense.”
The lone goal for Rappahannock came in the second half, when left wing Jason Fox sent a pass to leading scorer Damien Muriel, who beat the goalie easily, putting the shot into the upper left corner of the net.
That was about it for high points, as Mason had the run of the field the rest of the time.
Coach Maeyer said the young team lost confidence early and never recovered.
