accusations
To the Editor:
I’m hoping to write something that is not really another political letter to the editor, but I suppose it is. I just don’t enjoy, or feel enlightened by, the negative accusations, sniping, and labeling that tends to pass for public discourse these days.
It wouldn’t hurt the whole process if we would admit that all of these candidates are people who are in reality something other than their negative or positive public images, which have been constructed with such effort. That said, here is my attempt at influencing the election. . . .
I favor Kay Slaughter for Congress. She is a Democrat, so right there she gains support in some quarters and loses it in others. Not being too concerned with party affiliations, I’ll try to speak to others who may want to peek through the haze of labels and PR warfare.
I have been fortunate to get to know Kay over the past few years, working on some Virginia conservation issues of mutual concern.
I recommend her as a bright, enthusiastic, perceptive person with a good sense of humor. She is politically talented. She is strong on fiscal responsibility in government, and states she would work for an end to federal deficit spending. She wants to improve accountability in government in general, and recently decided that she would voluntarily limit her stay in office to three terms. This ties in with her general dismay with “professional politicians” (another label, certainly), which she says includes her opponent, George Allen.
