The population of Virginia has increased by 15.7 percent (840,000 people) in the past decade. Projections indicate that the state will absorb “at least” 2.5 million more residents in the next 30 years.
This was the news that a committee of six members of the state Commission on Population Growth and Development brought to a regional public meeting with local governmental officials, community leaders and activists, and people from the private sector in the Lord Fairfax and Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning districts last w'eek at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center near Chester Gap.
The commission is seeking input to use in formulating recommendations to the Virginia General Assembly to develop statewide policies on growth management through the year 2020.
The commission opened the meeting with a slide presentation outlining recent growth trends and their implications in the state , as well as, findings the commission has made thus far in its study, w’hich began in 1989 upon its creation by the General Assembly.
