Values for land in the land use program will remain essentially unchanged under the new assessment.

At a Board of Supervisors work session last Thursday, Commisioner of Revenue Beverly Atkins presented the supervisors with the figures recommended by the State Land Evaluation Advisory Council (SLEAC). Most were somewhat lower than those used currently.

Currently the county taxes land in the land use program from $250 to $660 per acre. The recommended figures ranged from $50 to $620 per acre. These values are for land in agriculture. Horticultural land is taxed the same as land in agriculture. Forest land is assessed at $250 per acre.

The supervisors recommended that the county continue to set $250 as a minimum for land in classes six, seven and eight. Class five land which is currently taxed at $290 per acre, with SLEAC recommending $280, would be rounded up to $300.

Class four land, which is currently taxed at $390 per acre, with SLEAC recommending $370, would be rounded up to $400. Class three land, which is currently taxed at $490 per acre, with SLEAC recommending $460, would be rounded up to $500, and class two land, which is currently taxed at $660 per acre with SLEAC recommending $620, would be rounded up to $700.
