To the present generation gingerbread is usually thought of as a dessert that is perhaps served topped with applesauce or apple butter or whipped cream or ice cream. But in earlier years, it was considered a bread to be served with a meal.
As I was preparing to write the food articles on apples this fall - as I have the past several weeks - I asked some of the good cooks in Rappahannock County to send me their recipes to use in my articles. Two recipes for gingerbread made with apples were turned in. They are very similar, only one is made with sweet milk and one with buttermilk. They are both delicious; so I’ve included both of them in my column this week.
