Mrs. Appel-Bucierka sees traditional reasons for vaulting’s popularity. “Vaulting is excellent preparation for gymkhanas and other 4-H competitions on horseback. Also, it’s the only equestrian sport where one horse will do for 10 or 20 kids, so it’s the most affordable equestrian sport,” noted the coach.
Both women cite a final and compelling factor to explain why vaulting has endured for centuries and is enjoying such a resurgence today. The skills children learn from vaulting comprise the equine equivalent to the automotive airbag, they say.
